English Version / The Feeling of Having Two Selves
Hearing My Own Music as If It Came From Someone Else
When I listen back to a finished piece, it sometimes feels as though I’m hearing a composer I’ve never met. Of course, that person is still me—maybe another “self” quietly living inside.
I’ve grown fond of that sensation. It makes me wonder, “Which one is the real me?” or “Do I even exist the way I think I do?” Those thoughts can be unsettling, but I tried to understand what’s happening.
The Joy of Meeting Another Version of Myself
When I’m playing in that dreamlike space—somewhere between focus and drifting—I feel like I’m using maybe 20% mind, 20% body, 20% heart. The remaining 40% is floating, free of intention.
And that’s where the “other me” appears.
It never feels disturbing—quite the opposite. There are moments when I want to ask, “Who played this phrase?” Sometimes it surprises me, as if someone else taught my hands a secret I didn’t know.
It’s exciting to meet this version of myself, even though I’m still not fully satisfied with my music. There is the me who isn’t content, and another me who suddenly exceeds my expectations. How can one person hold that gap? I still don’t know.
A Scientific Look at the ‘Two Selves’ Feeling
I asked AI to analyze this sensation, and the explanations made sense:
Flow State — losing track of time, feeling the music move on its own.
Metacognition — observing myself from the outside, as if listening to someone else play.
Light Dissociation — not pathological; just what happens during deep creative immersion.
For me, it seems closest to a mix of flow and metacognition.
The Pleasure of Meeting the Unknown Self
That encounter with the unfamiliar self is special—especially because it happens naturally. So I’ve learned to receive it as a bonus joy in the creative process.
I’m currently working on a piano solo album. Somehow I’ve already made so many pieces. If you have thoughts after listening, I’d love to hear them.
During production, there was a moment when the sound of the Ryukyu scale fit perfectly with my mood. I wrote a piece from that feeling—complete with a simple score.
